Malcolm Torry, a long-time activist for basic income discusses his new book, Money for Everyone: Why we need a Citizen's Income, which argues for a Universal Basic Income, or, as it is generally known, in the UK, a Citizen's Income. He concludes that every mainstream political ideology generates arguments for basic income.

Writing in Forbes Magazine, Tim Worstall offers his (qualified) support for the principle of a Basic Universal Income:
"The old idea of a universal basic income is getting another roll out. And it’s entirely true that the provision of such a thing would solve many of our economic problems. It’s not quite the miracle panacea but it is still pretty good all the same." Read the full (brief) article here. (An article by Godfrey Moase in the Guardian)
I'd like to see every citizen receive a basic income of AUD$30,000 per year. No exceptions, no means testing. This is why... Read full article (and ensuing comments) here. Proof that giving cash to poor people, no strings attached, is an amazingly powerful tool for boosting incomes and promoting development. By Matthew Yglesias
Poverty is, fundamentally, a lack of money. So doesn’t it make sense that simply delivering cash to poor people can be an effective strategy for alleviating it? Read the full article now on Slate.com. Julie Wark and Daniel Raventos, who are associated with our sister organisation in Spain, have just posted a short article on the Open Democracy website explaining how basic income fits into the republican tradition of political thought. As we in Ireland think of how to develop a new, democratic republic, the ideas here are well worth considering.

Anne B Ryan Introduction The system for social security as it has developed in Ireland and many other European countries is not working. It was designed for a different era, to provide income security for the relatively small numbers of people who became temporarily unemployed from standard jobs. Efforts to patch it up in response to new needs have been piecemeal. On the other hand, some EU countries, such as Italy and Greece, have no social security system in place. We need a proactive new system, building on the old system’s principles of security and social solidarity, but far more inclusive. Basic financial security should be a right for all members of society. A system that could achieve this is universal basic income, sometimes called a citizens’ income or dividend, and referred to as basic income in this short introductory paper. Our next Basic Income Ireland general network meeting will take place at the Central Hotel, Exchequer Street, Dublin 2 on Thursday May, 2nd from 6.30 to 8.30pm. The general theme of the meeting will be 'spreading the word' about basic income.
Everyone is welcome to attend. We try to run the network meetings in an inclusive and participative fashion so that everyone who attends can contribute (if they wish!) At this stage, as we are turning attention to spreading the word about basic income, it would be helpful if attendees can turn up with a working knowledge of the material on this website. This will prevent us having to spend too much time discussing the fundamental principles of basic income (thereby allowing us to really focus on creative ideas and input). That said, we are always open to creating opportunities for discussing 'advanced' issues and questions surrounding the topic. Any questions? Drop us a line and we'll be happy to help... In the meantime, don't forget to sign the EU Citizens' Initiative petition calling for an investigation of basic income, and please encourage others to sign it also. The European Citizens Initiative for an Unconditional Basic Income is a campaign to collect one million signatures to call on the European Commission to encourage cooperation between the Member States to explore Unconditional Basic Income (UBI) as a tool to improve their respective social security systems. Please visit their site and sign their petition at: http://basicincome2013.eu We are pleased to announce the first public meeting for Basic Income Ireland, which will take place at NUI Maynooth on the evening of Thursday, 7 March. All are invited to attend this event. For full details click on the 'read more' link below...
